I failed to meet him at Tangail but coming back from his own town, I successfully took his exclusive interview about war crimes trial issue and some other related current issues at his Mohmmadpur residence on the morning of December 15.

Justice at large, widow hits Facebook for help 6 months after her professor husband was killed in Sylhet, woman, now based near Dhaka, seeks justic

DHAKA, Oct 14: Six months after her husband was killed, and with the authorities yet to “punish his killers”, a Sylhet widow is pinning her hopes on the Web world to help get justice. For almost four months now, Afroza Harun, wife of slain professor Harun-Or-Rashid, chairman of the Philosophy Department of Sylhet Government Mohila College, is seeking help by writing messages on the social networking site Facebook.
Here’s a sample: ‘’Today is the birthday of my only daughter. Her father was killed. Who will wish her now? Almighty, punish the killers of my husband… No one helps us get justice.’’
And this: ‘’The society is going rotten by the day; the consciousness of the people have about to destroyed (and) no one dares to protest even when an honest young professor of a government college gets killed in board daylight. And those who protest are doing it as eyewash only. No one cares how a helpless family is passing its days.’’
Harun-Or-Rashid was killed near his house on March 21 this year — incidentally, the month of their 18th wedding anniversary. Afroza now lives in a rented house near Dhaka city, but requested The Independent against disclosing the address or location due to reasons of security.
Talking to The Independent over telephone, she said, “I have lost everything. So many people, including ministers and eminent personalities, had assured me of all cooperation and help for my family in various ways but they did not keep their words. Even my close relatives do not bother to contact me; not even by calling up.”
Asked how and why she went on the social networking site in her mission to seek justice for her slain husband, Arfoza said, “One of my brothers-in-law taught me how to use Facebook. I already have more than 4,000 friends on Facebook — many of them are renowned journalists, several are student leaders, and some are law enforcement officers.
“There are others who work with senior government offices. And I believe hearing my appeal for justice, they will definitely help me ensure exemplary punishment to those who murdered my husband and their patrons.”
She claimed she did not receive any monetary aid from the government and is in deep financial crisis at present.
“I believe the killer (prime suspect Abdul Latif) is yet to be arrested because he has the power of money backing him. I met with the then Inspector General of Police at the Police Headquarters on July 6 and he ordered the local police either to immediately arrest or to send details about the prime accused so that they can request the Interpol to issue a global arrest warrant against the accused, wherever he is hiding.”
The arrest warrant through the Interpol is yet to be issued.
The Criminal Investigation Department has now taken charge of the investigations.
Afroza said she applied to the Home Minister on May 2 to include the case in the monitoring cell for a fair and speedy trail. “But I have not get any result yet,” she said, rage mixed with despondency in her voice.
Prof Harun was killed allegedly by Abdul Latif, alias Kawser, and Rashel Ahmed on March 21 on his way to his rented house near his college. While Abdul Latif, the prime suspect, is still at large, the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had arrested the co-accused. It was learnt from their interrogation that Latif had killed the professor after he rebuked two female students, Sujina Akhtar Munni and Safia Khatun Lipi (alias Lipi Begum), for their misconduct inside and outside the classroom.
Latif was purportedly enraged by this and stabbed Prof Harun to death.

Sheikh Hasina and Begum Khaleda Zia again minus!

Krishak Sramik Janata League (KSJL) president Bangabir Kader Siddiqi Bir Uttam again wanted to ‘minus’ country’s top two most influential national leaders Begum Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina, two female bosses of the two largest parties in Bangladesh.

ASM Abdur Rab, one of the founders of the Jatiya Somajtrantik Dal, reiterated his suggestion of new ‘changed’ politics in the country being free from the current practice of ‘nepotism’ in the two major political parties.

Both of them came up with these hope and suggestion while addressing a Iftar Mahfil organized by Bangladesh Kallyan Party in a city hotel yesterday.

Kader Siddiqi said,‘‘ For the real changes in politics, we must minus both the Awami League and BNP along with their chief Sheikh Hasina and Begum Khaleda Zia from the politics.”

Abdur Rab, also the former vice-president of the Dhaka University Central Student Union said, ‘‘ If we really believe in a new ‘healthy’ politics for the betterment of the nation, we must free ourselves from the ‘nepotism’ politics of the Awami League and BNP.”

Bangladesh Kallyan Party chairman Major General(Retd) Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, Bir Protik in his special prayer prior to Iftar sought the ‘divine blessing’ from Almighty Allah to survive into country’s politics.

Though he mentioned many names of the Islamic clerics including Hazrat Shajajal of Sylhet and Khaja Mainuddin Chisti of India,very technically he did not mentioned any names of country’s late national leaders.

‘‘If we are qualified for country’s politics, Oh! Almighty Allah, kindly help us so that we can successfully survive in the national politics. And If we are not well qualified, please make us qualified,’’ he said in the combine special prayer which he himself conducted.

Kallyan Party chief hosted the Iftar and dinner party in the capital in the honour of top politicians and foreign diplomats and senior journalists, businessmen .

But no politicians from the ruling Awami League or opposition Bangladesh National Party attended the progarmme except the businessman turned politician BNP Chairperson’s advising council member Abdul Awal Minto.

Among the diplomats working in Bangladesh, the Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka was only present.

Only except the reporters who went to cover the event, no senior journalists replied the invitation of the former army officer who founded his party after the change over of the 1/11 when the army backed caretaker government took the state power in 2001.

Many such new political parties were formed during then Chief Advisor Dr Fakruddin Ahmed led caretaker government , whose allegedly tried to minus BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina from the country’s political scenario patronizing the newly formed parties.

All the new formed political parties reportedly supported the much talked political reforms of the caretaker government , targeting to minus the major politicians including Hasina and Khaleda.

However, most of the parties went out of scene after the last parliamentarian election held in December 29, 2010.

The deadly and barbaric grenade attack on Awami League

Senior leaders of the Awami League yesterday observed a two-minute silence programme in a different manner.

Instead of No chief guest, no special guests, no traditional political speech or usual fixed seats for guests, a small, white and black cloth covered stage.

Only a simple, small sentence,‘ In remembering the Shaheed of 21 August, 2004’ written on the simple black banner.

All the ruling party activists along with some common people were looking very attentive and waiting for the whistle to formally start the scheduled two minute silence programme remembering the martyrs who sacrificed their highly valuable lives to protect the life of their favorite leader Sheikh Hasina, then the leader of the opposition, now the prime minister from the deadly grenade attack during the BNP-Jamaat alliance government.

When the momentum came, it was 5: 22 pm, Syed Ashraful Islam, the Secretary General of Awami League, also the LGRD minister, whistled to start the silence programme.

Most of the senior Awami League leaders especially Awami League presidium member Begum Matia Chowdhury were seen very emotional and a bit crying, removing tears by hand tissue during the silence programme.

Syed Mezbahuddin Ahmed, the central organizing secretary of Awami league said while crying, non but Almighty Allah save the life of our president, the killers tried to eliminate the full leadership in a very planned way.

The ruling party set up a stage with a very big pendle, which covered almost all the blank areas adjourning to the party office.

Ignoring the heavy raining outside the followers of Bangabandhu, Father of the Nation, and his daughter Sheikh Hasina, we came here to protest such barbaric attack by the high ups of the BNP-Jammat led alliance government, he said while walking out from the spot.

All people even the journalists who went to cover the event keep a complete silence till the Ashraf again whistled ending the progrmme.

Micro-credits have oppressed the poverty instead: Kholiquzzaman

Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation(PKSF) chairman economist Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman yesterday said the micro-credit did not drive away poverty from the country .

‘‘Micro-credits have oppressed the poverty instead,’’ he said criticizing the much talked micro-credit for which Grameen Bank and Prof Yunus were awarded the Nobel prize.

He was addressing as the chief guest in a discussion titled ‘Vision 2021: And Bangabandhu’s Economic Thinking’ organized by Society for Development and Cooperation at CIRDAP auditorium.

The noted economist urged the countrymen to launch a mass movement against the people who are involved in bribery corruption, keening and touting to implement the vision 2021 of the government.

Former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Khondaker Ibrahim Khaled presented the keynote while former BB governor Dr Mohammad Forusuddin, parliamentarian poet Robi Rahman, among others, addressed the discussion.

Ibrahim Khaled said,‘‘ By introducing the BAKSHAL, Bangabandhu had taken a revolutionary programme to build a oppression-free Bangladesh adding,‘‘ After the August tragedy in 1975 , all welfare and revolutionary initiatives of Bangbandhu were cancelled except the supreme power of the president of the republic.”

Later General Zia and General Ershad had benefited from that supreme power given to the president by the fourth amendment of the constitution , he added.

Dr Mohammad Forusuddin said Bangabandhu never separated economy from the politics and only to make the distressed and oppressed people smiling, he introduced the BAKSHAL.

‘‘Though many people criticize BAKSHAL, it was never a one party system he said adding ,‘‘It was inevitable on that perspective of the country.’’

Fake scented musk of deer was recovered in Bangladesh

Fake scented musk of deer was recovered on August 10 from Jessor bound bus near Sharcha Upazila by a patrol team of 22 battalion of the Bangladesh Rifles.

After raising confusion over the originality of the scented musk, local officials of the forest department sent it to Dhaka for advance examination.

Later a team under Dr Tapan Kumar Dey of the Dhaka office came to decide that it was a fake scented musk.

They said, such valuable rarely scented musk are only found in the musk deer living in Kashmir, Sikim and Nepal .

Some vested syndicates allegedly cheat the common people by this type of fake scented musk in Bangladesh, which are used in different treatment across the world.

Ensure passenger safety

Journalist Forum for Communication and Environment and Green Club of Bangladesh yesterday at a press conference demanded the safety of the launch passenger.

They also demanded the exemplary punishment against the authority of the Coco-4 launch , allegedly responsible for the deadly incident that killed dozens of passengers at Bhola ahead of the previous Eid-ul-Azha.

Besides the coast guard, highway police and Rapid Action Battalion(RAB), they suggested the government to conduct the mobile courts to ensure passenger safety in road, railway and rivers ways.

GCB president Nurur Rahman Selim, GFCE general secretary Ashis Kumar Dey, Hirok Pasha, Monuj Kumar and Sharafat Ali Hira of Nodi Rokkha Safath of Nodi Rokkha Shapat , among others, were present the press conference held at the Dhaka Reporter’s Unity.

Ahead of the all occasions, the ministers and the concerned high officials made pep-talk regarding sufferings of the passengers but charging of extra money from passengers , the dangerous accidents continue, alleged Ashis Kumar Dey.

He said,‘‘ the dishonest officers of the railway , Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, Sea Transport Directorate , Bangladesh Road Transport Authority are mainly responsible for the accidents.”

Replying to a question GCB president Nurur Rahman Selim claimed that the Chief Inspector of the Sea Transport Directorate illegally earns at least Tk 2 lac monthly.

Replying to a another question Hirok Pasha said, the authority yet to take action against ship surveyor Md Moynuddin Julfikar and ASM Najmul Haque, who were reportedly responsible as they had several times fitness provide fitness certificate in favour of Coco-4 though they knew the mechanical defaults of the Coco-4 .

The did not even serve a show cause notice against the two officers, he added.

Stop opression on Indigenous people

Leaders of the Bangladesh Indigenous Union yesterday at a human chain in front of the National Press Club demanded the punishment of the killers of indigenous leaders and to stop all kinds of oppressions on them.

They also demanded the immediate formation of the land commission, to stop forcibly removing the indigenous people from their lands and inclusion of the indigenous people who were excluded under the government latest schedule.

The speakers said,‘‘ The government must punish the killers of indigenous leaders comrade Alfred Soren, Sottaband Hajong, Peren Slalsh, whom they said had dedicated their life in bringing the rights of the indigenous community.

Still the oppression , burning fire on the houses of the indigenous people are continue in both hill and plan areas, they alleged.

They condemned the police attacks on the indigenous village at Sherpur of Bogra district on the International Indigenous Day on August 9.

‘‘No government have so far ensure the constitutional rights of the indigenous people,’’ they said, adding the indigenous communities have contributed in all the democratic movements of the country .

A group of common people yesterday urged the Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia to refrain from celebrating her birthday on August 15 as the whole nation observe the day as National Mourning Day.

They said they did not support any specific political parties but they were politically conscious.

People, who visited the historic residence of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at 32 Dhanmondhi where he along with most of his family members was assassinated on this day, came up with the suggestion.

They said the celebration of her birthday on the day would definitely tarnish her image among the common people.

Rezaul Karim, a student in the Electric and Electronic Engineering Department of the Daffodil International University said, “If August 15 is an actual birth day of the Opposition Chief, she should refrain from celebrating the day in a bid to respect Bangabandhu, who led the war of independence.”

‘‘If prime minister Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the Awami League, starts celebrating such ‘false’ birth day on May 30, the assassination day of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, how the nation will feel,” he asked.

As a common people, I strongly condemn such celebration and will continue to raise my voice against such celebration as it only helps to destroy inter-party relationship, he observed.

He said, If Khaleda Zia is an ordinary people like me, it may not raise any question but as she is also a political celebrity, she should not be misguided by some opportunist party men in celebrating such a controversial birthday.

Niranjan Majumder, an employee of a private company, also echoed with Rezaul.

“The image of the opposition leader will not be elevated through celebrating birthday on the day,” he said.

Towfiquzzaman Mamun, a masters student of Dhaka University standing inside the Banganbandhu Memorial Museum said, “I have talked to many grassroots level BNP activists and they are also dissatisfied over the celebration on National Mourning Day.”

Terming it a poor political culture, he urged the BNP leader to come out from such practice.

Christian Life employee Zuthika Sikder said BNP had been celebrating the day only to hit the feelings of the millions of Bangabandhu fans.

She urged Khaleda Zia and her party men to refrain from such practice in a bid to face political rival Awami League.

Md Hossain, a freedom fighter hailing from Monirumpur Upazila of Jessore, said, Khaleda Zia should celebrate her birthday either one day before or one day later.

She should not celebrate her birthday on National Mourning day respecting the feelings of thousands Bangabandhu supporter.

CPB express concern over abduction of its Mymensing leader by zealots, demands security for comrades

President and the general secretary respectively of the Communist Party of Bangladesh Manjurul Ahsan Khan and Mujahidul Islam Selim in a statement expressed their concerned over the kidnapping of its Mymensingh city unit president Abdur Rab Mosharaf by religious extremists.

They urged the government to ensure the security of all of their party comrades.

They CPB leaders claimed that the miscreants not only kidnapped Mosharaf, but also tortured him mentally and physically,forcing him to listen to a compact disc of waz (religious sermons), while being forced to take a microbus ride on July 13.

Some unidentified terrorists kidnapped the communist leader when he was returning to his residence at Shehara Nirmalabash area in Mymensingh town.

The two CPB leaders alleged that the kidnappers threatened him to give up left politics and join the Islamic path.

Meanwhile, CPB Mymensingh district president Abdul Aziz Talukder and General Secretary Advocate Imdadul Haque Millat in another statement demanded of the government to immediately arrest the culprits behind the abduction of CPB leader Mosharaf.

BRTA drive sends time-worn buses, trucks of the city streets

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) yesterday conducted a drive against over 20 -25-year old buses and trucks, declared unfit to ply the city roads.

The first day’s drive netted only four buses, seized by the mobile courts, which also slapped fines and realised Tk 1 lakh 94 thousand and 200, filing 236 cases under the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1983.

The drive, supported by the Dhaka district administration with 15 mobile courts, each headed by an executive magistrate was aimed at improving the city’s traffic situation, reducing accidents and pollution..

But the drive sent the city’s aging fleets of rickety buses off the roads, producing long ques at bus stoppages and compelling commuters to jostle for a place to stand on their feet in the crowded buses.
It also helped the drivers of auto-rickshaws, taxis and rickshaw peddlers reap a windfall profit charging higher fare than usual making it difficult for many, faring them including school children and their mothers to take a long walk to their destinations.
After the drive, the seized buses were sent to the dumping ground at Kanchpur.

The BRTA also conducted a separate mobile court with it’s own magistrate at the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

During the drive, people are seen in long queue as they faced severe transport crisis, said traffic sergeant Nowsher Ahmed while discharging his duties near Jatiya Sangshad.

Additional District Magistrate of Dhaka Amitav Sarker, who supervised 15 mobile courts said, ‘‘We shall continue the ongoing drives until the situation improves to considerable level.”

Explaining the reasons behind lesser number of buses on the streets, Sarker said that being afraid of the drive, the owners of unfit vehicles did not bring their vehicles out of their garages.

BRTA chairman Ayubur Rahman Khan told the Independent “ We will evaluate the progress and try to find out a solution to remedy the plight of the passenger’s during the drive.

57 per cent tenants pay 50 per cent of monthly income as house rent, reveals a survey

Fifty seven percent tenants in the city have to part with almost half of their monthly income as house rent, revealed a recent survey conducted by Nagorik Sanghati, a NGO.

Most of the tenants are from low income and middle-low income groups of people.

Nagorik Sanghati conducted the sample survey among 300 tenants in the city from June 1 to 30 June this year.

Sixteen percent of the tenants spend Tk three thousand to five thousand, thirty seven percent pay Tk five thousand to seven thousand, twenty eight percent pay Tk seven to ten thousand, ten percent pay Tk ten to fifteen thousand , three percent pay Tk fifteen to twenty thousand while three percent pay above twenty thousand, the survey said.

The findings said that fifty percent of the tenants do not know the actual size of their rented premises while seventy three percent have no written contracts with their land owners.

Fifty seven percent of the tenants are not provided money receipts while forty three percent are not supplied the copies of bill of different utility services.

Forty five percent tenants alleged that their land lords increase the house rent every year while fifty percent people are not aware of house rent related laws.

Almost all the tenants favoured uniform policy on house rent.

How are you in your honorable but tougher job like International Peacekeeping mission? I always pray for your well being. I dream, days shall come when this dynamic DU man will lead the GOOD police.

About us? Being frustrated by the over all situation, I have to going to organize massive people especially our non-political real students so that my widow bhabi Mrs. Afroza Harun, my love, my care, my hope , our future, her two unfortunate kids LOBDHUK and ARHAM get justice against his government college teacher father’s killers and their corrupt all patronizers . You know how my brother Harun-Or-Rashid was brutally killed on Match 21 in Sylhet. No people dared to protest the killers, really it’s a coward area, all coward lives there.

It's our bad luck that we failed to meet you face to face before you leave for peace mission. The days may come you may meet me in your police custody being arrested in any false cases. They may take me into illegal remind, dare to physically torture me to stop me from my fight. I’m ready to face all these probable circumstances. Kindly pray for me so that noting can stop me from my social movement

You may assume that our life, personally I may be harassed by the killer's family, the other third parties criminals. I challenged the evil forces from my student life which continues till now.

Even your corrupted and later suspended Sylhet Kotowali Model Thana Officer- in- Charge Mr. Mohamad Ali, his corrupt gangs may try to commit second mistake by attempting to harass me.
But sorry to say, I'm worried but never afraid. CROSS FIRE? Sorry, I don’t care because my first love, my lost love Nigar Sultana Lata, also my BLACK DIAMOND cousin, has left me. From then I am leading a different life. I don’t care my life, my future. I have decided to dedicate my whole life for the distressed, oppressed across the globe, at least for the surrounding helpless people as a way to forget my burnings , my pains.

Stupid, corrupt journalism? This is just to gather another experience. However, I always tried to be a minimum fair, a minimum honest while I am in this nasty, fucking journalism. Because I never forget that I am a Dhaka University student and give up student politics and later joined in reporting to fight. I have a very bad reputation that I misbehave with so many fake, some times powerful but corrupt journalists.

In future, if I try to fight in the election, my vote will be zero. But I don’t care. However, still there some GOOD police, GOOD journalists. Unfortunately, the number is decreasing day by day in our society.

I’m begging door to door to meet the respectable IGP sir and some honest ministers face to face. But their closed people are very busy with their selves; there are very few people who are actually helping us.

All give us false and values assurance. From now, I don’t believe in any such assurance. I want to see the action. Even if necessary, we ready to meet more VVIPs than these.

My family is fully ready to go the different places and stay in hunger strike to meet our honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina face to face. We believe she will definitely help us to get justice. We are also ready to meet our opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia. We need help, support from all political parties, professional bodies to get justice.

SIR, as our old well wisher, you can help us by legally providing the official numbers of the IGP, some concerned high officials like AIG, DG (RAB), NSI and CID bosses as they are members of the Home Ministry’s Monitoring Cell.

No way, we want to express our increasing concerned over the fair trial of the brutal murder case to these higher police officers.

SIR, if possible, kindly give us the cell numbers of ex Manikgonj SP Helal Uddin Badri. I respect him as he is also a helpful man.

SIR, all these cell numbers I can manage from the senior journalists but I want to say my fellow people about you that one ex DU student now police officer whom I failed to meet face to face, are helping us in the this peaceful fight even from his very busy peacekeeping mission .

SIR, I also need your kind full help to remove the increasing frustration of my family, our supporters, and the peace loving people of my over four thousand Face book friends. They are worried that the killers may not get exemplary punishment because they have huge money, power and political connection.

Speculation was rampant Friday that pop icon Michael Jackson's mysterious death might have been caused by a lethal injection of pain-killing drugs.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Los Angeles County Coroner Investigator Jerry McKibben said it could take weeks to determine to complete toxicology tests that would indicate whether Jackson had alcohol or drugs in his system.

McKibben added that if the cause of death can be determined by the autopsy alone, he would announce the results. The British Sun tabloid reported that Jackson aides told emergency room doctors at UCLA Medical Center, where he died, that the star had collapsed after an injection of Demerol - a powerful pain killing drug similar to morphine and known to carry a risk of cardiac arrest.

"Shortly after taking the Demerol he started to experience slow shallow breathing," the newspaper quoted one source as saying. "His breathing gradually got slower and slower until it stopped."

Hospital officials haven't confirmed that account. Jackson family lawyer Brian Oxman told CNN Jackson's sudden death "is not something which has been unexpected....I can tell you for sure that this is something I warned about."

Oxman said Jackson had been struggling to cope with pain from several performance injuries, including a damaged vertebra and a broken leg, which had been interrupting scheduled rehearsal for his upcoming London tour dates.

"This family has been trying for months and months to take care of Michael Jackson," Oxman said.

"The people who have surrounded him have been enabling him. If you think that the case of Anna Nicole Smith was an abuse, it is nothing compared to what we have seen taking place in Michael Jackson's life."

The singer reportedly got hooked on Demerol and morphine during his 2003 trial for child sex abuse.

Los Angeles homicide detectives searched the rented mansion in the posh Holmby Hills section of the city - once the home of film star Sean Connery - where the singer had been living.

Police officials said the search was routine in high-profile cases. Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center Thursday afternoon after being stricken at the Holmby Hills mansion Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his home for nearly 45 minutes, then rushed him to the hospital, where doctors continued to work on him.

"It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known," his brother Jermaine said.

On Wednesday, Jackson attended a rehearsal at LA's Staples Center to prepare for a series of 50 concerts scheduled to start next month at London's O2 dome and continue into next year.

He had been spending untold hours working with a team of dancers for a performance he and his fans hoped would restore his tarnished legacy. Jackson's close friend, the psychic entertainer Uri Geller, suggested that Jackson's anxiety over planned comeback concerts may have killed him.

"I guess the stress, the anticipation and the passion he was emitting from his heart, wanting to do this comeback so badly, maybe that got to him," Geller said.

"That is all I can think, that maybe the stress killed him."

Despite rumors of Jackson's ill-health, the promoters of his London shows, AEG Live, said in March that he had been given a 4 1/2 hour physical exam by independent doctors in March and passed.

Four of Jackson's 'This Is It' concert dates were pushed back last month but AEG president Randy Phillips insisted the changes had "absolutely nothing to do with [Jackson's] health."

The death of the eccentric but undisputed King of Pop brought a tragic end to a stunning decades long career, which never recaptured its luster after falling from its peak in the 1980s, when his soulful voice and feverish, crotch-grabbing dancing dominated the charts and dazzled the world.

His 1982 album "Thriller" - which included the blockbuster hits "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" - is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.

The charismatic entertainer's dramatic death left the music world - and his adoring public - in deep mourning and rekindled sadness over his increasingly erratic career and the child sex-abuse allegations that left him forever labeled "Wacko Jacko."

Jackson, eventually accused of abusing three boys, was never convicted of any crimes.

"I am so very sad and confused with every emotion possible," said a stricken Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley who was married to Jackson in the mid-1990s.

"I am heartbroken for his children who I know were everything to him and for his family. This is such a massive loss on so many levels, words fail me." Jackson's sister, Janet, was "grief-stricken and devastated at the sudden loss of her brother" and flying back to California to be with her family, according to a statement released through her manager.

Jackson's death prompted broadcasters across the world to interrupt morning programs, while fans remembered a "tortured genius" whose squeals and sliding moves captivated a generation and sparked global trends in music, dance and fashion.

Even world leaders weighed in.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called it "lamentable news," though he criticized the media for giving it so much attention. Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung, who had met Jackson, said: "We lost a hero of the world."

"I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news," said legendary music producer Quincy Jones, who collaborated with Jackson on three of his best-selling albums, "Off the Wall," "Thriller" and "Bad."

"For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at this young age, I just don't have the words," Jones added.

Those who love absolute freedom should be always ready to embrace the heroic death, which glorify their memory. But the cowards who always compromise with the evil forces fearing jail or death are my real permanent enemies . I am not worried about my life, my death; I am ready to test my very expected heroic death.

I know there are so many bustards in every country who are working for the bloody foreign elements. They are really bustards to my consideration as they betray with their own motherlands. How deeply his brain was washed to be hatred militant in the name of Islam by the bloody militant leaders. Thanks for your warning. I know the absolute power of the Group Administrators. However, there a risk to be autocrat by removing others without any valid reasons.

For your kind consideration, I would like to mention you that I am also Administrator of many popular and positive groups in various social networks including Facebook. Some times few people make me extremely fade up by their idiot posting. However, I don’t warn my valuable group members. Normally I submissively request them to refrain themselves from posting such objectionable postings and comments on my groups.

I think you indirectly indicated me in your warning. With my full honesty, I would like to repeat that I had to post a copy of my letter to my respected Lailufar Yeasmin Madame as she earlier had sent messages to all group members accusing me. I would be more pleased if she would privately warn me as my respected teacher. I am her direct student and most importantly I am silently respecting her departed husband Syed Imtiaz Ahmed sir. Getting her letter to all group members , I think they may be confused about me while conspirators are still so active in my department. But I don’t care it, I am not coward. I am ready to face any situation to fight against these conspiracies against me. I believe in Almighty Allah. So I shall never lay down my head before the bad game players.

Today or tomorrow people will know the real character of the conspirators against me, I firmly believe it.

I had tried to clear myself, my stand regarding the allegation by posting a copy of this letter .

Since, I am not Administrator of the group, I had no way to respond her letters sent to more than three thousand group members without posting it on discussion topic. I should have right to defend me on her objection against me.

As I have to facing many conspiracy against me in and around my department . Because have direct protested against the much talked illegal admissions in our university especially in our reputed department and others corruption and irregularities. I wanted to clarify myself.

I always demand my punishment if I am actually responsible for any misdeeds. This is my personal ethics. I strictly follow it through my life.

Since after completing my MSS, I am planning to return back in national politics, I don’t like that any of my friends are misguided because of lack of accurate information.

Finally I want to say that making group for my most respected Syed Imtiaz sir is not my way of earning money. But some people has blamed me that I have posted the links of my another groups in your group only for my personal benefits.

It’s not true at all. I am working in an English daily and getting a handsome amount of money as my legal salary. But my parent still is giving me all the educational expenses. I need not earn any illegal money. I have such a reputation in this regard. If you have chance, you may cheek it from your own but neutral sources.

Some people may complain against my aggressive behave , I know, I admit this bad side of my behave , but even the enemies can never bring any allegation of earning money by unfair ways in my whole life.

Only to keep myself clear , I did not join any picnic, study tour and any other departmental function. However, I was always very helpful for such programs.

I beg your pardon as I have wasted your highly valuable times. There are dozens of my family members in Australia. I know how you busy you are there.

Finally I request you to remove me from the group if I have done any things, which contradict the ideology of my most respected Syed Imtiaz Ahmed Sir. However, in that case, I shall have to create another group for my beloved sir.

As his close friends, you have right, as beloved wife Lailufar Yasmin Madame has right to remember him. But it will not be unjust if I personally create another group to remember my most respected sir.

Really I need not to stay in this group as a kindness of any one. As his direct student, if you think it’s my right to be a member of your popular group, I shall be grateful to you if you keep my present member ship.

Who are my real favourite teachers?

It’s really a sensitive question. However, I don’t chose to respect any teachers only based on my relations with them. I do believe to respect according to a teacher’s sincerity, commitment, and care for his or her students.

I don’t make the teachers my favourite even if he or she wants to give me some favours some time ethically and some even unfairly. And I don’t put any teacher in my disliking lists if she or he does not gives me extra numbers or allows to submit my assignment paper after the deadline. I think this not fair way to evaluate a teacher.

Then if you want to know who is my top favourite teacher, I would like to mention the name of departed Syed Imtiaz sir for his highly attractive and effective teaching method.

But please don’t confuse about my respect to other teachers in our department. I do respect them according to their respective positions they carry being a teacher.

Really he was a great, unique brilliant .If he would alive, he would be surely an internationally renowned teachers.

May Almighty Allah keep my most favourite university teacher Syed Imtiaz Ahmed sir in the best heaven?
Let us pray for this 100% committed teacher of our department.

India must change its big brother attitude with its neighbours
Being a neighbour of the world largest democratic country, I am happy over the historic victory of the secularist Indian Congress led by Ms Sonia Gandhi. We, Bangladeshis were very anxious because the potential threats if the extremist BJP would come to power again.

Though Ms Sonia Gandhi is not in office, she is believed to be the king maker of the Indian politics. Most of the people in our Bangladesh believe that there is a good relation with the ruling Indian Congress and the Bangladeshi ruling party Awami League. We hope all the unresolved disputes among the neighbours in the South Asian regions will be solved peacefully if India can change their big brother attitude by reforming its current foreign policy. However, the possibility is not so high as we see all the Indian leaders are seen to be united over their foreign relations. We see the exceptional over the issue on India- USA bilateral relations more specifically the non-military nuclear deal with USA. India as a most influential power in the South Asian countries should have play a positive role in creating more trusts and confidence among the South Asian nations.

Special prayer for late nuclear scientist Dr MA Wazed Miah

Thousands of people from various walks of life joined the Qulkhwani for Dr MA Wazed Miah at the Prime Minister’s official residence Jamuna yesterday after Asr prayer, praying for the departed soul of the eminent nuclear scientist and husband of premier Sheikh Hasina.
Baitul Mukarram Khatib Salauddin Ahmed led the Asr prayer and administered the milad mahfil and special prayers at the Qulkhwani.
The participants prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of Dr Wazed and safe and long healthy lives of Sheikh Hasina, their son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Hossain Putul.
Former Presidents Hossain Mohammad Ershad, Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury, former Chief Advisers Justice Habibur Rahman and Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed, BNP joint secretaries-general Nazrul Islam Khan and Mirza Abbas, Jatiya Party Secretary-General Ruhul Amin Hawlader MP, presidium member Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud MP, LDP chairman Col. Oli Ahmed, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) President Manjurul Ahsan Khan, Krishak Sramik Janata League president Bangabeer Kader Siddiqui, and Zaker Party chairman Peerjada Mustafa Al Faisal were among the participants.
Inside the Jamuna bhaban, Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana and Joy’s wife were present among the females.
Besides, Awami League presidium members, Ministers, Advisers to the Prime Minister, State Ministers and Members of Parliament, chiefs of three services and diplomats attended the occasion of performing the religious rites.
Male guests stayed outside the premises of Jamuna and the adjacent state guesthouse Sugandha’s premises while arrangement was made inside Jamuna- bhaban area for female guests.
For a lack of space within the venue area, several thousand people attended the Qulkhwani staying in the adjacent streets and Ramna Park.
The only son of the Wazed-Hasina couple, Joy, addressed the gathering and sought “pardon” on behalf of their family if his father had done anything “wrong” with anyone.
Talking to reporters after the Qul, BNP leaders Nazrul and Abbas said they joined the Qulkhani as representative of their party which believes in ‘social harmony’.
Nazrul Islam Khan said the late Dr Wazed Miah established a rare example by not using political powers to get anything.
“He had been nearest to power. But he never used it. A person like him is rare in our country,” Nazrul said.

I’m extremely grateful to you all who have already join the group titled ‘Dr MA Wazed Miah’ and page ‘Bangladeshi nuclear scientist Dr MA Wazed Miah’ by this time. But as a human nature, we may forget him soon.

I think this absolutely gentleman has so many extra ordinary qualities in his life, which may make him remember in our hearts.

I created this group with a dream to do some thing more out of party politics for this natural talent. We must raise our active voice not to politicize this national hero. Because in the past we had to unfortunately see that some political parties have made Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib an Awami League Leader only. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s nuclear scientist husband Wazed Miah passes away

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s nuclear-scientist husband Dr M Wazed Miah died at the city’s Square Hospital yesterday after fighting for life for last few days. He was 67.
He was suffering from kidney and cardiac problems. Recently, he had undergone angioplasty at Singapore National Heart Centre.
His physician Dr Sarwar Hossain told reporters that Dr Wazed’s condition had “deteriorated fast” from 2pm and he breathed his last at 4:25pm. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was present at the time of his death.
Sheikh Hasina’s younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, and other family members of Wazed were also present there to see him for the last.
Hearing the death news of Wazed Miah, cabinet members, MPs and leaders and activists of different political parties rushed to the hospital and his home to see Wazed Miah’s body.
National leaders, including President M Zillur Rahman, and Leader of the Opposition Begum Khaleda Zia, condoled on the death of the eminent nuclear scientist and Prime Minister Hasina’s husband.
Speaker Abdul Hamid Advocate, Deputy Speaker Col (retd) Shawkat Ali and Cabinet members also expressed condolences on the death of Dr Wazed Miah.
Dr Wazed left behind his wife Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, one son, one daughter and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death. His son Sajib Wazed Joy is a computer engineer and lives in Washington and daughter Saima Wazed Putul lives in Canada.
His body was taken to his Dhanmondi Sudhasadan residence in the evening from the hospital.
As the body was taken to Sudhasadan, hundreds of people from different walks of life thronged there to get a glimpse of Dr Wazed.
BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, leaders of different political parties and eminent persons also visited the residence of Sheikh Hasina and consoled her.
Later, Wazed’s body was taken to the mortuary of the Square Hospital at about 9:45pm.
A condolence book will be opened at PM’s official residence Jamuna at 11am tomorrow (Sunday) for three days for diplomats and representatives of donor agencies to register their condolences on the death of Dr Wazed.
His first namaz-e-janaza will be held tomorrow (Sunday) at 10 am at Baitul Mukarram national mosque. The body will lie in state there, before the funeral prayer, for people to pay their last respects to the late scientist.
Thereafter, his body will be flown by a helicopter to his ancestral home at Pirganj in Rangpur district.
He will be laid to eternal rest at his family graveyard beside his parents after a second janaza there.
Dr M Wazed Miah was born on February 16, 1942 at Fatepur village of Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district. He was the youngest among four sons and three daughters of late Abdul Kader Miah and late Moyzunnesa.
In 1956, he matriculated with first division from Rangpur Zila School and stood second on the merit list at the ISc examination from Rajshahi Government College in 1958.
He obtained second position in first class at honours examination in Physics department of Dhaka University in 1961 and stood first-class first at Master’s in 1962.
In his student life in DU he was elected vice-president of Fazlul Haq Hall on Chhatra League ticket in 1961. He was arrested for participating in anti-education commission movement in 1962.
After completion of his education, Wazed joined the then Pakistan Atomic Energy Centre in Lahore as scientific officer.
Wazed obtained PhD from Durham University in 1967 and married Sheikh Hasina, the eldest daughter of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on November 17 the same year.
Dr Wazed was the chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission during his professional career.
He lived a quiet life after retirement. He was also known among his friends and relations as ‘Sudha Miah’.
Dr Wazed authored many books, including Fundamentals of
Thermodynamics and Fundamentals of Electromagnetics and some memoirs on Bangabandhu and Bangladesh.

He is going to re-organise his social fights against the bloody oppressors, conspirators, killers who try to stop him from protest. He doesn’t want to take law in his own hand but everything has a limit, when any body cross the limit, he may not remain patient like now. He is a young man also, his blood some times go very hot. But he will try to fight peacefully and lawfully against the miscreants in his locality but these may not bring result. No journalists have actual freedom. It’s almost same from developed to underdeveloped countries, western society to radical society. Some times only the media owners can enjoy very limited freedom. Media is directly or indirectly controlled either by the governments or the various non-state actors. It’s can’t even survive if the highly influential advertisers fade up on any specific media. When we, journalists have to fighting continuously for our rights, World Press Freedom Day is totally meaningless. However, with my profound respect I remember the brave journalists who died while discharging their novel profession or in jail and were tortured.

Policy makers know the real meaning of Digital Bangladesh first

I joined the digital Bangladesh Forum to implement our dream of E-Bangladesh. But I am confused whether the policymakers of our government know the real meaning of the Digital Bangladesh. Huge money has been wasting for the automation of our Dhaka University, UNDP financed the expensive project. But so far I know, they are totally failed to automation he central library. All works still based on traditional method. One student has to go at least ten person and wait several weeks, which could be done by few minutes if they follow computerized system in university. They have no updated data about students, teachers, and staffs. I want to do something for the Dhaka University before finishing my graduation .The mass people has paid their tax earned by their hard works , these taxpayers are from rickshaw puller to sex worker. I have to spent their highly valuable tax for my study from primary school to university level . So this is my commitment to the taxpayers of my dearest and nearest motherland. If we fail, the future generation will not pardon us .

So let’s join the vision of Digital Bangladesh irrespective of political affiliation. We may be Awami League backed BCL atavists or BNP backed JCD; this duty should be carried out for the betterment of our whole nation, not for party interests.

Dhaka University falls far behind world standard; it ranks 4922nd: A shame for Bangladesh

The standard of education in Dhaka University,
the country’s premier university, falls far behind the world standard as it now ranks 4922nd.
Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), in Spain put the Dhaka University at the 4922nd position among 6,000 universities of the world.
The University also ranks 44th in the Indian subcontinent in its World Universities Ranking based on electronic publication, scientific results and international activities in 2009.
Young researchers and teachers of the Dhaka University made the disclosure about its poor raking at a seminar here Saturday.
Center for Development Research (CDR), a research organization of young teachers, organized the seminar titled ‘Teaching Methodology’ at DU RC Mujamder Arts Auditorium.
Chaired by CDR President Dr M Saiful Islam, the seminar was addressed, among others, by Prof Dr Aminul Islam of Philosophy and Prof Dr Muhibur Rahman of Chemistry departments.
Former Director General of Bangla Academy Prof Dr Syed Anwar Hossain and Science Faculty Dean Prof Dr Tazmeri Selima Akhter Islam were also present at the seminar.
Kazi Mostak Gausul Hoq of Information Science & Library Management Department presented the keynote paper titled ‘Teaching Methodology:
the Case of the University of Dhaka’, at the seminar.
“The rate of taking leave by teachers at some DU departments is above 50 percent. Going abroad for higher study becomes the aim of young teachers after joining the university,” Gausul Hoq said in his paper.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Aminul Islam said the students should be taught through an enjoyable fashion. “They (teachers) need to understand the psychology of the students to effectively teach them.”
Prof Dr Muhibur Rahman said no teacher should enter the classroom without adequate preparations.
ATM Abdullahel Kafi of Peace and Conflict Studies said the young generation looks up at the elders for direction and guidance. “Without being overly critical to the seniors or the juniors, it is safe to say that, we do not see a lot of exchange of views on academic matters between the two generations.”
CDR President Dr M Saiful Islam said all departments and institutes should be well equipped with multimedia projectors, slides, videos and other teaching tools at this digital age.
Most of the discussants demanded the university administration, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Government take some steps to improve the standard of education of the university.
They suggested establishing a University Teachers’ Training Centre (UTTC) where all newly recruited public university teachers would participate for reaching foundation training.

Nation celebrates Pahela Baishakh tomorrow (Tuesday) amid gaiety; Ramna Park ringed with security bulwark

Pahela Baishakh, marking the advent of Bengali
New Year, will be celebrated tomorrow (Tuesday) amid gaiety across the country under tight security cover.
True to their centuries old tradition, people of all walks of life will gather in funfairs to hail the New Year 1416 with new hopes and aspirations.
Mogul Emperor Akbar introduced the Bangla calendar year and the celebration of Pahela Baishakh began during his rule. Now it has become integral part of the Bengali’s cultural heritage and tradition and turned into a day of merriment.
The day is a public holiday.
President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia gave separate messages on the occasion conveying New Year’s greetings to the countrymen and all Bengali-speaking people across the globe.
In his message, President Zillur Rahman said Pahela Baishakh is a “unique day of nurturing as well as self-realization of our eternal rich tradition”.
He expected that the New Year spirit would “unite all in all aspects of national life by forgetting all past conflicts”.
The President hoped that the New Year would bring welfare and happy news for all.
In another message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the influence of Bangla New Year in the life of the Bangali is diverse. “The way Bengali New Year has brought change in the psychology of the Bengali it also has cast impacts on their attitude, behavior, dress and food habit,” she said.
Recalling the memories of the persons killed in the bomb attack at Ramna Batamul during celebration of Pahela Baishakh in the 1408 Bengali Year, she prayed for salvation of the departed souls. She also expressed her deep sympathies for those who became crippled in the heinous attack.
Sheikh Hasina also expressed the hope that the Bengali New Year festival would bring the messages of “happiness, peace and prosperity, overcoming all obstacles in the way of advancement of the nation”.
In her message Khaleda Zia said, ”New Year has brought messages for us to start with fresh vigor putting behind past failures, disgrace and gloom.”
She also hoped that the Bengali New Year festival would bring happiness, peace and unalloyed pleasure for all.
Traders and shopkeepers across the country will open ‘Halkhata’ (new book of accounts) and entertain customers and visitors with sweets on the first day of the New Year as part of the tradition and culture.
On every return of Pahela Baishak, all classes of people, especially the youths, come out on the roads at daybreak wearing traditional dresses to celebrate the day.
Thousands of people will throng traditional venues in different parts of the capital city, including Ramna Park, Suhrawardy Udyan, Central Shaheed Minar, Dhaka University, Shahbag, and Dhanmondi Lake areas, to welcome the New Year amid pageantry.
The most colorful celebration of the Bengali New Year begins at the Ramna Batamul at dawn with an elaborate programme undertaken by Chhayanaut, a leading cultural troupe. Artistes from Chhayanaut will welcome the day with Tagore’s famous song ‘Esho hey Baishakh, esho, esho (come O Baishakh, come)’ under the banyan tree at the Ramna Park.
Students of the Institute of Fine Arts of Dhaka University, wearing colorful masks, will take out a ‘mangal shobhajatra (procession of good wishes)’ in the morning as part of the carnival.
Men, wearing panjabi-pyjama, women, attired in sari with red borders, and children in colorful dresses all will throng traditional Baishakhi Mela (fair) and other cultural functions in the city and elsewhere in the country.
People will partake of ‘Panta Bhat (watery rice)’ with fried hilsha, lentils, green chili and onions at home, restaurants and fairs following the rich tradition of Bengali culture.
Though the observance of Pahela Baishakh has become popular in the cities, but New Year festivities are deeply linked with rural life in the country.
People in the villages will bathe early in the morning and, clad in fine clothes, go to visit relatives, friends and neighbours. They will also visit different Baishakhi fairs arranged in many parts of the country.
The Bengali-speaking people of West Bengal will also celebrate the day in a festive manner.
State-owned Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar and the private TV channels will air special programmes on the day.
Different socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the day. Bangla Academy, Shilpakala Academy and Nazrul Institute will organise separate cultural programmes to welcome the New Year.
The Libertarian War Museum will stage various programmes that include dance and folk songs at 9:30 am on the day.
The Baishakh Udjapan Jatiya Parishad will also bring out a procession
from the Central Shaheed Minar, marking Pahela Baishakh
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) declared off-limits to vehicles roads stretching from Shahbagh to Matsya Bhaban and from the TSC to Doel Square of Dhaka University, as the entire zone turns into a human sea.
Extensive security measures have been taken in the city for smooth celebration of the day. More than 8,000 uniformed police, elite troops of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), dog squads, bomb-disposal units will guard Ramna and Dhanmondi areas to provide foolproof security for the celebration of Pahela Baishak under full scanning focus of CCTV cameras.
Besides, FBI-trained SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics), 19 check-posts, 37 pickets, eight mobile patrols and 60 motorcycle patrols will add to the security bulwark seen as unprecedented since the concert bombing at Ramna Batamul that left 10 people dead during Pahela Baishak celebrations in 2001.
Security will also be provided for the ‘Mangal Sobhajatra’ pageantry arranged by the students of the Fine Arts Institute.

What type of Islam it is? What type of Muslims we are?

Shame, really shame, totally shame for a peaceful Muslim if there are such terrorist attacks in the Holy Mosque. It is matter of extreme shame if the so called Muslims carry terrorist attack in the name of holy Islam. Are they doing these terrorisms to protect Muslims, to save Islam? No, never. After the hatred 9/11 in the USA,

I personally feel seriously embarrass being a Muslim. I imagine the increasing negative ideas on the whole Muslim community from my friends of the others non-Muslim communities. I have many online friends around the world. Some times many of my friends unfortunately ignore me only because of my religious identify. However, they know that I always hate such Muslim terrorists.

Every day I have to hearing such unpardonable terrorist acts carried out by Muslims. Even in my dearest and nearest motherland Bangladesh such hatred militancy is growing day by day. But most alarming is that many of us believe that such militancy has international terrorist links. Most disgraceful when I hear these foreign funds some times comes from international charity in the name of social activities.

I urge all peace--loving Muslims to raise their voice and protest from their respective positions to stop these at once for saving our universal holy religion Islam, to restore the positive image of whole Muslim community and finally to save the world. We don’t want to see any more terrorism in the name any holy religion especially Islam.

Obama urged Israel and the Palestinians to resume peace negotiations

The following is a full transcript of Hisham Melhem's interview with President Obama on Al Arabiya TV:

Q: Mr. President, thank you for this opportunity, we really appreciate it.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you so much.

Q: Sir, you just met with your personal envoy to the Middle East, Senator Mitchell. Obviously, his first task is to consolidate the cease-fire. But beyond that you've been saying that you want to pursue actively and aggressively peacemaking between the Palestinians and the Israelis. Tell us a little bit about how do you see your personal role, because, you know, if the President of the United States is not involved, nothing happens – as the history of peace making shows. Will you be proposing ideas, pitching proposals, parameters, as one of your predecessors did? Or just urging the parties to come up with their own resolutions, as your immediate predecessor did?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I think the most important thing is for the United States to get engaged right away. And George Mitchell is somebody of enormous stature. He is one of the few people who have international experience brokering peace deals.

And so what I told him is start by listening, because all too often the
United States starts by dictating -- in the past on some of these issues --and we don't always know all the factors that are involved. So let's listen. He's going to be speaking to all the major parties involved. And he will then report back to me. From there we will formulate a specific response.

Ultimately, we cannot tell either the Israelis or the Palestinians what's best for them. They're going to have to make some decisions. But I do believe that the moment is ripe for both sides to realize that the path that they are on is one that is not going to result in prosperity and security for their people. And that instead, it's time to return to the negotiating table.

And it's going to be difficult, it's going to take time. I don't want to prejudge many of these issues, and I want to make sure that expectations are not raised so that we think that this is going to be resolved in a few months. But if we start the steady progress on these issues, I'm absolutely confident that the United States -- working in tandem with the European Union, with Russia, with all the Arab states in the region -- I'm absolutely certain that we can make significant progress.

Q: You've been saying essentially that we should not look at these issues -- like the Palestinian-Israeli track and separation from the border region -- you've been talking about a kind of holistic approach to the region. Are we expecting a different paradigm in the sense that in the past one of the critiques -- at least from the Arab side, the Muslim side -- is that everything the Americans always tested with the Israelis, if it works. Now there is an Arab peace plan, there is a regional aspect to it. And you've indicated that. Would there be any shift, a paradigm shift?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, here's what I think is important. Look at the proposal that was put forth by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia --

Q: Absolutely.

THE PRESIDENT: -- to put forward something that is as significant as that.
I think that there are ideas across the region of how we might pursue peace.

I do think that it is impossible for us to think only in terms of the
Palestinian-Israeli conflict and not think in terms of what's happening with Syria or Iran or Lebanon or Afghanistan and Pakistan.

These things are interrelated. And what I've said, and I think Hillary Clinton has expressed this in her confirmation, is that if we are looking at the region as a whole and communicating a message to the Arab world and the Muslim world, that we are ready to initiate a new partnership based on mutual respect and mutual interest, then I think that we can make significant progress.

Now, Israel is a strong ally of the United States. They will not stop being a strong ally of the United States. And I will continue to believe that Israel's security is paramount. But I also believe that there are Israelis who recognize that it is important to achieve peace. They will be willing to make sacrifices if the time is appropriate and if there is serious partnership on the other side.

And so what we want to do is to listen, set aside some of the preconceptions that have existed and have built up over the last several years. And I think if we do that, then there's a possibility at least of achieving some breakthroughs.

Q: I want to ask you about the broader Muslim world, but let me – one final thing about the Palestinian-Israeli theater. There are many
Palestinians and Israelis who are very frustrated now with the current conditions and they are losing hope, they are disillusioned, and they believe that time is running out on the two-state solution because – mainly because of the settlement activities in Palestinian-occupied territories.

Will it still be possible to see a Palestinian state -- and you know the contours of it -- within the first Obama administration?

I think it is possible for us to see a Palestinian state

THE PRESIDENT: I think it is possible for us to see a Palestinian state -- I'm not going to put a time frame on it -- that is contiguous, that allows freedom of movement for its people, that allows for trade with other countries, that allows the creation of businesses and commerce so that people have a better life.

And, look, I think anybody who has studied the region recognizes that the situation for the ordinary Palestinian in many cases has not improved. And the bottom line in all these talks and all these conversations is, is a child in the Palestinian Territories going to be better off? Do they have a future for themselves? And is the child in Israel going to feel confident about his or her safety and security? And if we can keep our focus on making their lives better and look forward, and not simply think about all the conflicts and tragedies of the past, then I think that we have an opportunity to make real progress.

But it is not going to be easy, and that's why we've got George Mitchell going there. This is somebody with extraordinary patience as well as extraordinary skill, and that's what's going to be necessary.

Q: Absolutely. Let me take a broader look at the whole region. You are planning to address the Muslim world in your first 100 days from a Muslim capital. And everybody is speculating about the capital. (Laughter) If you have anything further, that would be great. How concerned are you -- because, let me tell you, honestly, when I see certain things about America -- in some parts, I don't want to exaggerate -- there is a demonization of America.

THE PRESIDENT: Absolutely.

Q: It's become like a new religion, and like a new religion it has new converts -- like a new religion has its own high priests.

THE PRESIDENT: Right.

Q: It's only a religious text.

THE PRESIDENT: Right.

Q: And in the last -- since 9/11 and because of Iraq, that alienation is wider between the Americans and -- and in generations past, the United States was held high. It was the only Western power with no colonial legacy.

THE PRESIDENT: Right.

Q: How concerned are you and -- because people sense that you have a different political discourse. And I think, judging by (inaudible) and
Zawahiri and Osama bin Laden and all these, you know -- a chorus --

THE PRESIDENT: Yes, I noticed this. They seem nervous.

Q: They seem very nervous, exactly. Now, tell me why they should be more nervous?

Now, my job is to communicate the fact that the United States has a stake in the well-being of the Muslim world that the language we use has to be a language of respect

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I think that when you look at the rhetoric that they've been using against me before I even took office --

Q: I know, I know.

THE PRESIDENT: -- what that tells me is that their ideas are bankrupt. There's no actions that they've taken that say a child in the Muslim world is getting a better education because of them, or has better health care because of them.

In my inauguration speech, I spoke about: You will be judged on what you've built, not what you've destroyed. And what they've been doing is destroying things. And over time, I think the Muslim world has recognized that that path is leading no place, except more death and destruction.

Now, my job is to communicate the fact that the United States has a stake in the well-being of the Muslim world that the language we use has to be a language of respect. I have Muslim members of my family. I have lived in Muslim countries.

Q: The largest one.

THE PRESIDENT: The largest one, Indonesia. And so what I want to
communicate is the fact that in all my travels throughout the Muslim world, what I've come to understand is that regardless of your faith -- and America is a country of Muslims, Jews, Christians, non-believers -- regardless of your faith, people all have certain common hopes and common dreams.

And my job is to communicate to the American people that the Muslim world is filled with extraordinary people who simply want to live their lives and see their children live better lives. My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy. We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect. But if you look at the track record, as you say, America was not born as a colonial power, and that the same respect and partnership that America had with the Muslim world as recently as 20 or 30 years ago, there's no reason why we can't restore that. Andthat I think is going to be an important task.

But ultimately, people are going to judge me not by my words but by my actions and my administration's actions. And I think that what you will see over the next several years is that I'm not going to agree with everything that some Muslim leader may say, or what's on a television station in the Arab world -- but I think that what you'll see is somebody who is listening, who is respectful, and who is trying to promote the interests not just of the United States, but also ordinary people who right now are suffering from poverty and a lack of opportunity. I want to make sure that I'm speaking to them, as well.

Q: Tell me, time is running out, any decision on from where you will be visiting the Muslim world?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I'm not going to break the news right here.

Q: Afghanistan?

THE PRESIDENT: But maybe next time. But it is something that is going to be important. I want people to recognize, though, that we are going to be making a series of initiatives. Sending George Mitchell to the Middle East is fulfilling my campaign promise that we're not going to wait until the end of my administration to deal with Palestinian and Israeli peace, we're going to start now. It may take a long time to do, but we're going to do it now.

We cannot paint with a broad brush a faith as a consequence of the violence that is done in that faith's name

We're going to follow through on our commitment for me to address the Muslim world from a Muslim capital. We are going to follow through on many of my commitments to do a more effective job of reaching out, listening, as well as speaking to the Muslim world.

And you're going to see me following through with dealing with a drawdown of troops in Iraq, so that Iraqis can start taking more responsibility. And finally, I think you've already seen a commitment, in terms of closing Guantanamo, and making clear that even as we are decisive in going after terrorist organizations that would kill innocent civilians, that we're going to do so on our terms, and we're going to do so respecting the rule of law that I think makes America great.

Q: President Bush framed the war on terror conceptually in a way that was very broad, "war on terror," and used sometimes certain terminology that the many people -- Islamic fascism. You've always framed it in a different way, specifically against one group called al Qaeda and their collaborators. And is this one way of --

THE PRESIDENT: I think that you're making a very important point. And that is that the language we use matters. And what we need to understand is, is that there are extremist organizations -- whether Muslim or any other faith in the past -- that will use faith as a justification for violence. We cannot paint with a broad brush a faith as a consequence of the violence that is done in that faith's name.

And so you will I think see our administration be very clear in
distinguishing between organizations like al Qaeda -- that espouse violence, espouse terror and act on it -- and people who may disagree with my administration and certain actions, or may have a particular viewpoint in terms of how their countries should develop. We can have legitimate disagreements but still be respectful. I cannot respect terrorist organizations that would kill innocent civilians and we will hunt them down.

But to the broader Muslim world what we are going to be offering is a hand of friendship.

But I do think that it is important for us to be willing to talk to Iran, to express very clearly where our differences are, but where there are potential avenues for progress

Q: Can I end with a question on Iran and Iraq then quickly?

THE PRESIDENT: It's up to the team --

MR. GIBBS: You have 30 seconds. (Laughter)

Q: Will the United States ever live with a nuclear Iran? And if not, how far are you going in the direction of preventing it?

THE PRESIDENT: You know, I said during the campaign that it is very important for us to make sure that we are using all the tools of U.S. power, including diplomacy, in our relationship with Iran.

Now, the Iranian people are a great people, and Persian civilization is a great civilization. Iran has acted in ways that's not conducive to peace and prosperity in the region: their threats against Israel; their pursuit of a nuclear weapon which could potentially set off an arms race in the region that would make everybody less safe; their support of terrorist organizations in the past -- none of these things have been helpful.

But I do think that it is important for us to be willing to talk to Iran, to express very clearly where our differences are, but where there are potential avenues for progress. And we will over the next several months be laying out our general framework and approach. And as I said during my inauguration speech, if countries like Iran are willing to unclench their fist, they will find an extended hand from us.

Q: Shall we leave Iraq next interview, or just --

MR. GIBBS: Yes, let's -- we're past, and I got to get him back to dinner with his wife.

Those who are fighting each others in the holy mosque using their shoes in the name of protest of the newly appointed Khatib are definitely destroying the image of holy religion Islam.

They are not Musullis, rather than terrorists, I believe. But the new government must handle this highly sensitive issue very carefully so that no extremist religion based political parties can misuse the issue against the government.

By holding today’s long awaited general election in Bangladesh, you definitely proved your vision of democracy and development. People supported you when your forces intervened to bring an immediate ends to the political dead look.

However, many of your decision created controversy. But finally your smart forces has proved their true dedication and commitment to the country’s constitution and nation.
I thank the highly conscious voters for practicing their democratic rights peacefully.My thanks also go for the political parties for their peaceful election campaign.

Being a journalist, I had the golden chances to witness vote casting of Sheikh Hasina, elder daughter of our Father of Nation in Dhaka City College centre. I also witnessed Khaleda Zia, country’s first woman prime minister while she was casting her vote in Dhaka Cantonment centre. I think today’s election is the most credible election the history of our dearest and nearest mother land Bangladesh.

I talked many voters, polling agents. They also told me that election was going without any troubles. I talked to local and foreign election observers who were also fully satisfied with the overall election environment.

So I urge all to accept the election results fairly and wok together to fight against poverty, illiteracy, injustice, corruption and terrorism in both home and abroad.

If any political parties unfortunately try to raise any question about the credibility of today’s election, it will be a great sin, a great sin really.

I am voter of Dhaka -8 constituency, where two former student leaders, Rashed Khan Mennon and Habibun Nabi Shohel were main rivals. But I openly voted ‘NO’ because I hate both BNP and AL’s present dangerous so called alliance politics . I gave ‘NO’ vote openly where my two journalist colleagues witnessed it. As I did it openly in front of polling official’s table, they opposed me. But I protested their objection terming it’s my very right.

Today I am also part of the wining party AL as my family and friends worked for AL candidates in my native village in Manikganj district. I congratulate my father, a retired school teacher and his all associates for working hard in favour of Awami League nominated candidate Zahid Malek Swapan , only son of late Col Malek who was also former Dhaka City mayor , minister. AL led our great Independent War in 1971, so nation has given it another victory but on condition to avoid autocrat and corrupts.

Now this is great chance, really a great opportunity to say ‘NO’ to hatred war criminals and recognized autocrat , corrupts from politics jointly by both AL and BNP . BNP and AL must do it for the sake of better Bangladesh, to implement Digital Bangladesh.

Again I thanks all for working to restore democracy in Bangladesh. Long live Bangladesh. All Mighty Allah, please help us, forget us, forgive us.

He belongs the millions Iraqi people who are suffering a lot for the American aggression in Iraq in the name of protecting the Iraqi people but he definitely crossed his limits violating the code of conduct.

Bikalpa Dara Bangladesh President Prof AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury demanded of the government to declare the three mostly affected districts as disaster zones immediately.

He also urged the government to launch ‘work for cash’ programme in the cyclone affected area.

He was speaking at a press briefing at Dhaka Reporters Unity after returning from the SIDR affected area.

Bargona, Pirojpur and Bagerhat districts must be declared disaster zones while the Sandurbans should be treated separately, he said.

Placing many short term and long term recommendations for rehabilitation programme he said, ‘‘ To increase the purchasing capacity of the cyclone affected people, government must start ‘work for cash’ programme instead of work for food.’’

While replying to a question of the newsmen, Bikalpa Dara President said, ‘‘The government will be only responsible, if the US war ships do not go back after completing the relief operation.’’
It is good if the war ships carry ‘relief items’ instead of weapons, he observed.
B Chowdhury , also former president refused to reply to a question from this correspondent whether they would support or oppose if the government accepts any offer of Israeli humanitarian assistance for the cyclone affected distressed people , he said,‘‘ The question is a hypothetical ’’.

However, his son Mahi B Chowdhury , organising secretary of the party told The New Nation, ‘‘ If the Israeli government really wants to provide relief, they can do the job easily through any third party like the USA.’’

Prof B Chowdhury claimed, there is no relation between relief operation and lifting of emergency from the country.

Major (Retd) Abdul Mannan, Secretary General, Bikalpa Dara suggested the government to provide VGF cards, seeds and agricultural loans as part of a rehabilitation programme.

Refugee experts, human rights activists and civil society representatives urged the government to solve the Rohingya Refugee problem raising the issue into the international forum.

They also urged the government to review the country’s bilateral relation with Myanmar looking at from human aspect instead of economic one .

They were speaking at a seminar on‘ Rohingya Refugee in Bangladesh: Issue and Concerns’ organised by Neeti Gobeshona Kendro at National Press Club yesterday.

While speaking at the seminar, refugee expert and Refugee and Migratory Movement Research Unit (RMMRU) Executive Director Prof CR Abrar said there is no refugee law in the country to address the issues properly.

Considering it as our constitutional limitation he said,’ Without enacting proper law, the refugee issues could not be addressed successfully.

He protested the tendency of making refugee community responsible for all criminal activities across the globe.

Referring to the difficulties in solving the Rohingya issue Prof CR Abrar, former chairperson of the International Relations Department of Dhaka University alleged, even if the present military junta’s rule ends and National League for Democracy leader Aung Suu Kyi comes to power, the refugee issue may not be solved immediately. Because it was created long ago.

Prof Abrar, also a human right activist, accused the Burmese rulers of violating the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which reads ‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights’.

Rohingya community is virtually stateless people, he added.

Former Secretary Nurul Islam emphasised on the need for finding the root causes of the problem while Ain O Salish Kendra General Secretary Adv Asaduzzaman voiced in favour of proactive role of government especially for the children in the refugee camps.

Shawkat Mahmud, president, National Press Club moderated the seminar while Mahbubul Haque presented the keynote paper.
Educationist Mohammad Shafiullah, development activist Aminur Rasul, Rohingya refugee leader Dr Ishaq Khan and Mohammad Ali Ahsan, among others, addressed the seminar.

They demanded of the government to reduce registration fees so that the middle class people can buy flats easily.
RRHAB leaders speaking at a view exchange meeting with editors of newspapers in Dhaka city yesterday.
Naya Diganta Editor Alamgir Mohiuddin, Jugantor Editor Golam Sarwar, Observer Executive Editor AM Mofazzal, New Nation Editor Mostafa Kamal Majumder, Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shyamal Dutt, and Prothom Alo Joint Editor Abdul Qayyum, among others, were present at the meeting.
The REHAB leaders urged the government to allocate lands from RAJUK plots at concession prices and faster approval of their building plans.
They requested the government to introduce a long-term housing policy instead of changing building code frequently for the sake of building a panoramic Dhaka city.
Their other demands included reducing tax and vat on raw materials of backward linkage industries related to the construction sector and government services at cheap rates.

Referring to the various irregularities and fund misappropriation of NGO’s, leaders of a local coalition demanded of the caretaker government and the Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate “corrupt practices” in the NGO sector
The coalition of local NGOs urged the government to give exemplary punishment to the responsible for ensuring accountability of the aid-fed non-governmental organisations operating in the country.
They were speaking at a discussion meeting organised by Coalition of Local NGOs, Bangladesh (CLNB) at Dhaka Reporters Unity yesterday.
While speaking as chief guest Comrade Nurul Haque Mehedi, chairman, National Front alleged that the NGO’s brought Tk 66,000 crore from abroad since 2004.They are taking 30 to 40 per cent interest from the loan seekers though they themselves received the fund from the donors on 4 to 5 per cent interest only.
He called upon the government to take “stern action against the NGOs responsible for violating government terms and conditions and laws to ensure their accountability.
Harunur Rashid chairman of CLNB in his presidential speech blamed the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) for floods in Jamalpur and Sirajganj, as it built an embankment on the Jamuna and changed the course of the mighty river.
He accused water expert Ainun Nishat of disclosing secret information of the state to the Asian Energy, as a consultant of the multi-national company, and his involvement in the various Government committees formed to conduct feasibility study regarding the controversial company.
He also blamed Grameen Bank, BRAC and others influential NGOs which received 90 per cent of the total foreign funds.
Sangjukta Sramik Federation leader Harunur Rashid Bhuiyan said the Government should bring NGOs under a strict system, as they are making money in the name of development.
Speakers also warned the people about the donor agencies, as they alleged the donors are involved in ‘repression’ in the name of giving aid.

Bangladesh is likely to face a serious environmental disaster due to the electronic wastes(E-waste) arising out of mishandling millions of non-functional cellular phones across the country .
About thirty two million mobile sets would be discarded or would be non-functional causing at least two thousand and five hundred sixty tones e-waste by the end of 2010, a research paper presented yesterday claimed.
It says, the country will have to see more than 4-kilometer long rally of 5 tones trucks of e-waste each year.
Ahmad Wasimul Haque Bari, former assistant professor, Asian University said this while presenting a research findings on ‘Nonfunctional mobile sets and its bad impacts on environment’ at the National Press Club yesterday.
Referring to the dangerous impact of the e-waste coming from the mobile set, he suggested for immediately setting up adequate recycle plants to ease the situation.
Ahmad Wasimul Haque Bari also chief researcher of the project urged to introduce and implement ‘Take Back and Exchange’ offer by the cell phone importers and network providers so that local subscribers are inspired to involve themselves in the recycle process.
He alleged that no mobile companies or local distributors did not cooperate in conducting the research fearing loss in their business.
While speaking as chief guest, former Dhaka University Pro-vice Chancellor Prof Shahid Uddin Ahmed suggested enacting and implement policies to reuse, recycle mobile phone sets and reduce cell phone related pollution.
He also recommended to ensure phone manual in Bengali language and printing environmental caution note in Bangla with logo on the packaging box.
Shamsun Nahar, Executive Director, Center for Research and Studies emphasised on the need for building massive awareness by airing advertisements and others effective publicities in the country to protect the environment.
She also suggested to extend media role in this regard.

Criticising the commercialisation of county’s education systems, former Adviser to the caretaker government Dr Akbar Ali Khan alleged that the ill –practice has been degrading the education sector day by day.

Comparing ‘sales of knowledge’ with selling one’s physical beauty for money, he urged the teachers to restrain themselves from doing this unethical act.

He said,‘‘ If we can ensure proper awards to the honest persons for their honesty and punish the dishonest persons for their dishonesty, good governance and rule of law in the country can be easily established.’’

He was speaking at a discussion meeting jointly organised by UNESCO and Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO in the city yesterday marking the International Teachers Day.

According to Dr Akbar Ali, without eradicating the increasing discriminations between the rural and urban education, quality education could not be ensured in the country.

Referring to the teacher’s financial condition, he added that some teachers are living under extreme poverty while some others are earning more than one lakh per month from private coaching or any other means.

He opined that bad people are driving the good people out, which is a major obstacle to the establishment of the rule of law in the society.

Stressing the need for quality education, he suggested introducing evaluation system for the teachers.

He said, in the present knowledge based society, teachers must admit that they would also learn from their students as knowledge is a continuous process.
Terming increasing centralisation of the education system the major problem for our education sector, he suggested for the rapid decentralisation for quality education.

Slum dwellers will double in 30 years in Bangladesh

The slum dwellers of the country will double by the next thirty years if the objective of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) is not fulfilled, said speakers at a discussion meeting yesterday.

According to MDG, at least one crore slum dwellers are to be brought under viewable development by the end of 2015.

Expressing their concern over the existing deteriorating situation in the slum areas in different cities of the country, they urged the government to take initiatives for readdressing the situation.

They urged the government to formulate a national policy and take proper steps to ensure shelters of the slum dwellers in the major cities of the country.

They were speaking at a discussion meeting marking the International Habitat Day organised by the Coalition for the Urban Poor (CUP) in the city yesterday.

Dr Prof Nurul Islam Nazem, General Secretary, Center For Urban Studies (CRU) said, though the slum people are contributing a lot to the economy of the country, they are still living in inhuman condition.
‘‘Until and unless the discrimination between the poor and the rich are not removed, development is not possible,’’ Prof Islam observed.

CUP Executive Director Mostafa Kaium Khan said the fundamental rights of the slum dwellers for getting shelters are not yet met.
If their shelters are not ensured, a safe city will not be possible.

Presided over by CUP Executive Director Mostafa Kaium Khan, Rafiqul Islam, Fatema Akter, Momtaz Akter, Abdur Rashid, Abdul Mannan, and Kazi Baby, among others, participated in the discussion.

Fatema Akter in her speech said, though each year we celebrate the International Habitat Day, no outcome actually come and we do not get benefits.
Abdur Rashid alleged that all give us promises but nobody keep that promises.
Rafiqul Islam said with the prevailing discrimination in the society, we cannot expect development.The progamme followed by children arts competition.

On this World Peace Day, I am submissively requesting all not make our dearest Bangladesh a place of violence, a den of terrorists in any excuse.
This country is ours, we all love our motherland very much .So in the wake of the publication of a cartoon in Bangla daily Prothom Alo and the Eid issue of Bangla magazine ‘Saptahik 2000” for an objectionable article hurting the religious sentiments of the Muslims, no one should try to make it a issue .
Since the authorities of the publications have apologized to all concerned , even they are ready to beg pardon appearing in the court , no one should trigger the tense situation further .
Islam is a religion of absolute peace . We should restrain ourselves from doing any activities which show Islam as non-tolerance tour non-Muslims friend across the world.
As a peaceful Muslim , I am again requesting my all Muslims not to violate the law of the country.
Besides I urge to all the media to be more careful in publishing such reports or any other publication so that it does not hurt sentiment of any religious people .

Serious conspiracy going on against my
stands against the illegal admissions in Dhaka University, against my anti-corruption movement.

Today I am writing with deepen sadness in my heart. I was totally unprepared for such kind of fully baseless, ill-motivated blame of being involved in the recent cowardly attempt of circulating false leaflets against my highly respected and father-like teachers of my own department.

On Monday, Mrs Bushra Hasina Chowdhury, one of my best-respected Madame of my department at the classroom charged me directly for the nastiest propaganda against her and other senior teachers. To oppose the fully baseless allegation against me, I had to aggressively clarify my position in this regard.

Really I cannot even imagine such kind of hatred misdeed against my respected teachers who have done a lot during my readmission into the first year in 2002-2003 academic session.

To my knowledge, I have no enemies in my department. I have not conflicts with others since I never involved myself into any kinds so called grouping- lobbing inside the department.

Even never I did participated in any programme like study tour, picnic and orientation programme because I am a busy in my journalism profession.

But why and who are trying to misguide my respected teachers against me, I do not know at all.

I suspect the fake students of my own department whose studentship have already been cancelled, the suspected students who were given show cause notice , another fake students who were not come under investigation still now , their syndicates or their close friends may cowardly misguide my respected teacher to restrain me from my ongoing movement against the illegal admissions.

Certainly they will do another wrong if they think that I will stop my present social movement against the much-talked illegal admissions and the corruption in all the public universities of the country.

I am not afraid of this but I became fully surprise being accused in such kind misdeeds against my honorable teachers to whom I shall be remaining grateful forever.

To be informed about my plans, desire and my mentality, one can just type my name ‘Habibullah Mizan’ in the different search engines like Google, Yahoo or MSN. He or she will get huge current information about me in the Internet.

I know I am fully honest to my own conscious and I believe that the truth will publish soon by the grace of Almighty Allah.

If any one can prove my direct or even indirect involvement in this bastard -type act, I will take any kind of punishment the university authority decides.
But if no one can prove that, those cowards who are continuously trying to damage my relations with my respected teachers, I will find out them and give good lessons, Enshallah.

If necessary, I will definitely bound to openly demand the investigation headed by the Anti-Corruption Commission or any other government intelligence agencies like Special Branch (SB), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), National Security Intelligence (NSI), the elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) or an independent committee headed by the highly respected retired judge of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.

I am urging to all my well-wishers to pray so that if I was really involved in this nastiest act, I can not avoid the exemplary punishment given by the university authority, the law enforcing agencies and finally by Almighty Allah.

Kindly pray to Almighty Allah so that if am innocent, I can over come and conquer such kind of hatred conspiracy against me and can be strong, un-compromised and determined in my present stand against illegal admission and all kinds of corruption in the holy educational institutions.

I will write again for you, Enshallah.

The present caretaker government should be given enough time for completing their ongoing tasks of eradicating corruption and irregularities from the various sectors of the country.

If needed they must act like a bulldozer and demolish everything around them. People will rebuild and reconstruct every thing on the debris.

Speakers at a roundtable on ‘ The Role of Intellectuals on Ongoing Reforms’ made these observations.

Sammilita Samajik Andolon, a platform of various professionals yesterday organised the roundtable at Mukijodda Jadugaor in the city yesterday.

Sammilita Samajik Andolon President Dr Hayat Mahmud moderated the discussion while Ziauddin Tareq, Vice-President of Sammilita Samajik Andolon presented the key-note paper.

Harshly criticizing the ‘so called’ intellectuals Major General (Retd) Amin Ahmad Birikram accused them of confusing the government.

‘‘In the past we saw the intellectuals having link with the corrupt persons in various ways,’’ the prominent freedom fighter said.

He demanded the punishment of all corrupt professionals including the corrupt and opportunist intellectuals.

According to the retired army officer, at least 100 corrupt persons must be hanged publicly.

He opined that there should not be any question of human rights of the thieves.

Journalist AFM Istiaq suggested to work with specific reform agenda while Advocate Parimal Chandra Gohha stressed the need for accountability of the political high-ups.

Referring the claim of having legitimacy of the government, Prof Shawkwat Ara Hossain said, ‘‘Such kind of legitimacy would be invalid if the price hikes are not effectively controlled and people’s expectations are not fulfilled.

She demanded the mandatory system disclosing of the wealth statement of the politicians each years .

According to Advocate ASM Sabur, the present caretaker government has accomplished various commendable tasks except some silly mistakes.

Former Director General of Bangla Academy Prof Syed Anwar Hossain said, ‘‘ In the past we have several leaders but did not have any statesman-like attitude.’’

Pankaj Bhttachariya, Gon Forum presidium member alleged that most of the intellectuals of the country failed to detect the real causes of non-functioning of democracy.
Ziauddin Tareq in his paper proposed for holding referendum after two and half year of every government to assess the failures and success of the regime.
He also suggested the need of communicating between the government and the citizens so that government can assess the people’s aspiration on different issues.
